How many projects or programs can be shown on the PgMP Application?

There is no fixed maximum number of projects or programs that you can report on a PgMP Application. However, PMI requires you to provide information on at least two projects associated with each program you report.

But first, let's quickly understand the eligibility for the PgMP.

How Many Programs Can You include on your PgMP Application?

If you already have a PMP, showing one program can be good enough, provided that program gives you the required amount of program management experience.

For anyone who already has a PMP, they don't need to show project management experience separately on the PgMP Application. They only need to show the required program management experience.

But if you are directly aiming for the PgMP without a PMP, you need to show both project management experience and program management experience.

If you fall in the camp where you just need to show program management experience, then my recommendation is that showing one program can be good enough, provided it gets you to the required amount of program management experience. The PgMP Panel Review team does not give you extra credit for showing a higher number of programs on your application.

How Many Projects Should You Show Within a Program?

For anything to qualify as a program, you should show at least 2 projects within it.

However, in my experience of writing PgMP Applications for the last couple of years, my recommendation is to pick a program where you can show more than 2 projects, such as 3 or 4 of them because that would add more scale to your program.

Additionally, the projects should genuinely be part of the program and should contribute toward the broader objectives of that program.

For example, you may have worked on a larger transformation program that included several related projects. Showing those projects can help demonstrate how they were managed as part of the overall program.

The important thing is that the experience you report should genuinely represent program management experience, rather than simply being one large project.

A large project would have phases or activities within it, such as development, testing, etc., whereas a program has multiple related projects that come together to accomplish a strategic goal.

How Many Projects Should You Show If You Don't Have a PMP?

If you don't have a PMP, you should show enough projects to demonstrate the required project management experience.

Since you need to show both project management experience and program management experience, you need to select projects that allow you to demonstrate the required project management experience.

You don't need to show a high number of projects simply for the sake of having more projects on your application. Instead, just select projects that genuinely demonstrate your project management experience and can be clearly explained in your application.

The panel reviews your program management experience, so you need to clearly explain your role and responsibilities and demonstrate how your experience relates to program management.
