PMP Certification Eligibility Check FAQs
1. How do I know if I am eligible for the PMP certification?
To know if you are eligible for the PMP certification, you need to first meet PMI's education, project management experience, and professional training requirements. Along with 35 hours of project management training, you need:
-
36 months of project management experience if you hold a Bachelor's degree or higher.
-
60 months of project management experience if you have a High school diploma.
-
48 months of project management experience if you have an Associate's degree.
However, meeting the required number of months is only part of the eligibility requirements. PMI looks for demonstrable experience leading and directing projects in a professional setting.
Many candidates are unsure whether their experience qualifies because they struggle to translate their work into project management language or are unable to understand how their responsibilities fit within the broader domain of project management. Understanding how to present your experience clearly is also important for preventing PMP application rejections.
If you are unsure, our PMP Eligibility Check above can help you assess whether your experience aligns with PMI's requirements.
2. What experience qualifies for PMP certification?
Experience from different industries and professional backgrounds can qualify for the PMP certification as long as it was gained in a professional setting and demonstrates project management experience.
PMI also states that the role matters more than the job title. They don't mandate that you need to have held a Project Manager job title to qualify, as long as you undertook project management responsibilities.
As part of the PMP application, you will need to describe selected projects and explain your responsibilities across the project lifecycle. You will need to write project descriptions to show how you managed the project from start to finish.
Examples of project management responsibilities include:
-
Determining the project planning approach and planning key elements
-
Engaging with stakeholders
-
Overseeing project execution
-
Managing and motivating the project team
-
Keeping the project on track
-
Ensuring the project delivers its outcomes and customer value
Note that home and academic projects do not qualify, while professional volunteer projects can qualify when they demonstrate the required project management responsibilities.

3. Do I need the job title “Project Manager” to qualify for the PMP?
No. You do not need to have the job title “Project Manager” to qualify for the PMP. PMI focuses on whether you have experience leading and directing projects in a professional setting, rather than the title held within your organization.
The distinction between your role and your job title becomes particularly important when you submit your project descriptions as part of the PMP application. PMI is interested in the role you performed and the responsibilities you undertook on the project—not simply what your position was called.
Even if your application is selected for verification or audit by PMI, you are not required to have held the Project Manager job title for your application to be approved.
So, whether your job title was Project Manager, Business Analyst, Operations Manager, Consultant, or something else, the focus should be on what you actually did on the project and how you led and directed the work.
4. Does PMP project management experience have to be from a specific industry?
No. PMP project management experience is not restricted to a specific industry. You can gain qualifying project management experience across a wide range of industries, including IT, construction, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, consulting, and government.
PMP is a generic project management discipline that can be applied across different industries.
What matters is not the industry in which you worked, but whether your experience demonstrates that you were responsible for the project work and outcomes. You can review these examples of projects for the PMP application to see the types of projects that may qualify.
5. Can volunteer work or working for a non-profit count as PMP experience?
Yes. Volunteer project experience or project management experience gained while working for a non-profit can count toward PMP experience if the work was performed in a professional setting and demonstrates the required project management responsibilities.
However, not all types of experience qualify. Academic or school projects, personal or home projects, and routine operational work do not qualify as project management experience for the PMP.
