PMP Coaching vs. Training: What Might Work Better for You?

PMP coaching vs. training: comparison of personalized coaching and PMP training

Many people confuse PMP coaching with PMP training, but there are major differences between them.

PMP coaching involves personalized guidance and mentorship provided by an experienced PMP coach to help candidates navigate the entire PMP certification process, from application approval to end-to-end exam preparation. PMP training, on the other hand, is an in-person or virtual 4-5 day PMP training course that follows a set schedule and focuses on getting students through the course materials.

The primary goal of a PMP coach is to understand every candidate’s personal background and tailor the coaching so that they have the best chance of clearing the PMP exam.

This can include designing a personalized study strategy based on:

  • the student’s availability and capacity,

  • helping them prepare an approval-ready PMP application

  • scheduling weekly meetings to check on progress and test performance,

  • providing personalized feedback and continuous guidance,

  • enabling students to identify weak areas during their preparation and improve,

  • providing high levels of accountability, discipline, and motivation during their PMP preparation journey.

The goal of PMP coaching is to provide the required push to the student to get exam-ready.

PMP training classes usually run over a couple of days, such as 4–5 days, to a couple of weeks, depending on how the training provider has set up the schedule.

PMP training uses a set curriculum for all learners and teaches the materials, coupled with doing some practice questions required for exam preparation, with little to no support after class completion.

Why Does PMP Coaching Work Better for Some People Than PMP Training?

CareerSprints has been in both the PMP training and coaching space and pivoted to PMP coaching from traditional training because of a common problem we have seen students face with PMP training.

In our experience working with several students, one of the biggest problems with traditional PMP training is that students often do not take the exam after completing their training. This happens because they lack the accountability to continue studying the materials and practicing exam questions after the class is over.

Going through training does not guarantee that you will be prepared for the exam, and students need to spend time studying the materials and practicing exam questions to feel exam-ready after completing their training.

A student can complete a 4–5 day training programme, understand the course material, and still need several weeks of additional preparation before they are ready to take the exam.

Thus, while PMP training may deliver the course material to the student effectively, the student still needs to invest significant time preparing for the exam after the training is complete.

Who Is PMP Coaching Best Suited For?

Preparing for the PMP certification requires time and effort.

In general, PMP coaching is a very useful solution for people who have commitment issues or lack the consistency or time to study for an exam as tough and lengthy as the PMP certification.

PMP coaching can benefit a large set of PMP exam aspirants, but here’s a list of people who it might benefit the most:

  • busy working professionals,

  • candidates with limited study time,

  • candidates who need a flexible study schedule,

  • candidates who are unsure about their application eligibility or are struggling with writing their PMP application project descriptions,

  • people with little project management experience,

  • candidates who need personalized guidance, attention, and accountability,

  • people who studied for the PMP on their own but failed the exam, and

  • people who purchased a self-paced PMP course on Udemy or from another e-learning provider but did not complete the course or did not feel ready for the exam after completing it.

These are genuine issues that we have seen experienced candidates face after talking to 1,000+ candidates who have worked with us.

Should You Consider PMP Training or Coaching?

The answer to this question may not be as straightforward as it seems, and depending on who you are, how quickly you want the certification, and what your schedule may look like, your choice might differ.

PMP training, such as a bootcamp, is useful for people who feel they learn better in a classroom setting and cannot do without one. They like the in-class interaction and are okay with intense 7–8-hour class days.

It is also useful for people who are self-disciplined and know that after the classroom training, they are ready to put in the hours over weeks to solidify their preparation before taking the exam. Classroom training can also be beneficial for people who have strong project management experience since they may be able to grasp the material much better.

If you really want to learn the material rather than rush through it, require accountability, guidance, and feedback, need PMP application guidance, and want to feel sure that you are ready for the exam, then PMP coaching may be the preferred solution for you.

Coaching is a collaborative process where you are consistently working with your coach to identify your weak areas, improve them, and maintain your progress toward achieving your goal.

PMP Coaching or Training: Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Choose

Choosing between PMP training and PMP coaching depends largely on your individual circumstances. Before deciding, ask yourself the following questions.

1. How much time can I realistically dedicate to PMP preparation each week?

If you have a predictable schedule and can make sure that you study on your own, PMP training can work for you. However, if you have limited or unpredictable study time, coaching can help create a personalized study strategy based on your availability and keep you on track.

2. Do I need help with writing my PMP application and qualifying for the exam?

If you are unsure about your eligibility, struggle with documenting your project experience or fear that PMI may reject your application, then a PMP coaching programme can provide you with PMP application guidance in addition to exam preparation. Coaches can review and edit your application to match PMI’s application criteria, which is a major part of the PMP preparation process. Without application approval, you cannot take the exam.

3. Am I disciplined enough to continue studying after completing a training course?

Completing PMP training does not necessarily mean you are exam-ready. You still need to study, practice questions, review your performance, and improve weak areas. If you struggle with consistency after training, coaching can provide the accountability you need.

4. Do I learn better in a classroom or through personalized guidance?

PMP training follows a structured curriculum and can work well for people who prefer classroom interaction and want to get through the training in 4–5 days. Coaching does take more time, but it allows you time to absorb the materials and is more personalized, with guidance and feedback based on your individual strengths, weaknesses, and preparation needs.

5. Do I have all the resources I need to prepare for the PMP certification exam?

When students sit for training, the training company provides its own materials. However, successful students have consistently reported using course materials or practice tests from different sources to effectively prepare for the exam.

The advantage of using a PMP coach is that the coach can help you select the most useful materials for your PMP preparation based on what has helped a large number of students.

5. How much project management experience do I have?

Candidates with strong project management experience may be able to understand the material quickly and prepare independently after training. People with little project management experience may benefit from additional guidance to understand concepts and apply them to PMP-style questions.

6. Do I need someone to keep me accountable?

If you can create a study plan and consistently follow it on your own, you may not need coaching. If you struggle with consistency, a coach can schedule regular meetings, review your progress and test performance, and provide the accountability, discipline, and motivation needed to stay on track.

7. Have I purchased a self-paced PMP course before but failed to complete it?

If you have purchased a self-paced course from Udemy or another e-learning provider but didn't complete it or still didn't feel ready for the exam, simply purchasing another course may not solve the problem. You may need personalized guidance, accountability, and feedback to keep your preparation moving.

8. Am I looking for training, or do I need help becoming exam-ready?

PMP training can provide the course material and foundation you need, but becoming exam-ready requires additional study, practice, performance analysis, and improvement. If you want someone to guide you through that process, PMP coaching may be the better option.

9. Would PMP coaching benefit me if I failed the exam once before?

If you have already taken the PMP exam and failed, PMP coaching can be quite helpful, not only from an exam guidance point of view but also from a morale-boosting standpoint. Your coach can help you understand what went wrong and develop a more focused preparation strategy for your next attempt. Instead of simply going through the same training again, a coach can help you identify your weak areas, closely review your practice-question performance, enhance your exam strategy, and provide the accountability and motivation needed for your next attempt.
