In our experience of writing over 500 approved PMP applications, we’ve worked with several military professionals who struggled to translate their military experience into the language required for the PMP application. Most of these individuals were in the process of transitioning out of the military and into a corporate career. While many held leadership and team management roles during their military service, a common challenge they faced was presenting that experience using PMBOK-aligned project management language.
In this quick and essential guide, we’ve included real examples of military PMP application content that you can use to understand how to frame your own military project management experience in PMI terms. We’ve also provided tips on selecting the right projects and how to effectively write them for your application.

What types of military projects would be suitable for the PMP application?
To understand the types of projects you can select to include in the PMP application, it helps to understand the definition of a project according to PMI: “A project is a temporary endeavour to accomplish an objective usually involving a team.” So, as long as the initiative you were involved in met this definition, it can be used as a project for the PMP application.
Military projects are often complex and filled with terminology that may be unfamiliar to those outside the armed forces. That’s why it’s crucial to strip away military jargon and describe your projects in clear, business-like language.
To illustrate the above point further, here are some military project titles and how they can be translated to easy-to-understand project management language.

As you can see from the table above, irrespective of the type of project you were involved in, what matters is how you’re able to rephrase military jargon into easy-to-understand civilian language.
